A Deep Dive into the Materials of Vis™ Divide

Posted by: Erin Schwasnick

Outside of “how does it work?” one of the most common questions we hear regarding Vis™ Divide, our segmented rigid conduit, is “how is it made?” We understand the frequency of this question, because engineers can’t be too careful about the products they spec. That’s why we’re taking a look at exactly what materials are in Vis Divide, how they measure up to industry standards and how Vis Divide is made.

External materials

The outside of Vis Divide is standard high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit that’s frequently used in telecommunications projects. Even with the addition of the fabric inner divider, Vis Divide conduit meets all telecommunications industry standards. Additionally, it conforms to the following American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International standards:

  • ASTM F2160: Standard Specification for Solid Wall High Density Polyethylene Conduit based on Controlled Outside Diameter
  • ASTM D3350: Standard Specification for PE Plastics Pipe and Fittings Materials

These tests ensure that the physical properties of the conduit material are appropriate for the telecommunications, CATV and electrical/power utility applications. You can find all the property specifics for Vis Divide in this technical data sheet.

Internal materials

The fabric divider inside Vis Divide is a woven fabric made of a nylon-PET (polyethylene terephthalate) blend. It is designed to minimize shrinkage during the extrusion process and maintain flexibility while pulling cable. The fabric was specifically constructed to withstand the strength of pulling tensions while still maintaining the lowest coefficient of friction as possible. We also performed a series of “worst case scenario” tests to verify the durability and stability of the embedded divider fabric and found that it was durable enough to withstand any conditions that the product might experience during installation.

In addition to the fabric divider, you can also find our Vis™ pull tape within the Vis Divide conduit. Our Vis pull tape is specifically designed for a softer feel than other brands for more efficient knotting and less rework. Our unique Mprint™ process increases print durability and legibility.

Manufacturing process

Just like standard HDPE conduit, Vis Divide is formed using extrusion, a high-volume manufacturing process in which raw plastic is melted and formed into a continuous profile so that there are no seamlines. While the process is slightly altered from standard HDPE to allow for the introduction of the fabric divider into the conduit wall, it’s the same tried-and-true process that utilities professionals trust.
